In what now seems the dim and distant past,
there were hundreds of small publishers who actively encouraged new writers.
The book publishing world is now mostly divisions of multinational businesses
where the power is not in the hands of editors but accountants who seem
more interested in sales figures and ledgers rather than books.
Recent developments in print technology, however, which enable low cost
and short run print services at reasonable prices without a loss of quality,
provide an opportunity for small publishers to re-emerge.
As a small independent publisher enabled to take full advantage of these
latest technological advances, PS Avalon Publishing can offer an alternative
route for authors working in our particular fields of interest.
We are not a vanity or subsidy publisher and we would advise you to beware
of those who offer flattery in exchange for money, offer little or no royalty
or serious sales, and encourage the author to have printed and pay for more
copies of their book than could possibly sell.
We will not flatter you and categorically will not publish a book that we
do not like and can confidently place on our lists. Our ability to utilise
print on demand and short run services enables us to hold to this vision
and offer you personal attention and all the necessary skills to enter the
world of published authors.
We do not ask you to fund or underwrite the publishing costs of your book,
but we do expect our relationship to be reciprocal and, to show that willingness
from the author's side, we ask you to purchase some copies of your book.
This way both PS Avalon Publishing and the author have a commitment to the
book and a relationship of mutual support and interest.
If you are a new, original or specialist author with a realistic attitude
you cannot expect to be taken up by a mainstream publisher, and indeed,
once you are awakened to the pitfalls in their approach, you may not want
to be. But for your target markets, your book, published in sensible numbers
and available through relevant outlets, can be both a valuable addition
to its genre and a successful creative venture.
Areas of Interest
To maintain our independent and completely personal approach, we have
chosen to limit our publications to areas both of particular interest to
us and in which we have the necessary skills to advise, support and promote
an author. These two areas we loosely categorise under the headings:
• inspirational poetry;
• personal and spiritual development.
These headings may be interpreted rather widely: many different forms of
poetry may be considered inspiring, and personal and spiritual development,
as well as including self-help or instructional works, also may include
autobiographical accounts, memoirs, children's stories, family histories,
and legacy writing, as long as it has a relevance to the theme.
Marketing and Distribution
An issue for small publishing ventures has traditionally been the problem
of distribution and marketing, but in the modern world this does not have
to be a difficulty. If you have a book published by a large conglomerate,
unless you are a "celebrity author" the best you can expect is a week or
so of promotion. If you book doesn't 'sell on' after the initial release,
it will quickly, at best, be on a not-promoted back list or, at worst, be
remaindered and/or pulped. The large book sellers like Smiths and Waterstones
do not have the interest or space in stocking every new book let alone ones
that have been on release for even only a short time.
PS Avalon Publishing doesn't pretend to compete with large publishers and
does not offer books for sale in bookshops. What we do offer is a three-pronged
approach to marketing. Firstly, your book will be available on the internet,
through our own site, through Amazon and other major net book retailers.
Secondly, your book is made available in the major libraries; your book
is fully catalogued with Whitakers who publish The Bookseller; your book
is placed on the computerised lists used by major booksellers; and information
is supplied to Book Data thus information is available to potential markets.
This means anyone who wishes to order your book can do so easily. Your book
may have a limited appeal but appropriately targeted to the right market
can be surprisingly easy to sell and make successful.
The third approach to marketing is almost certainly the most effective and
is based on our continuing relationship with the author. We will support
you in your own sales and marketing campaign to whatever level you wish
to take it. We will offer informed marketing advice and practical suggestions:
for instance, we will help you create a good press release suitable for
your own target outlets for your book, including local media, shops, papers,
magazines, and radio, the areas where it is generally agreed that authors
can expect the best success in marketing their book.
PS Avalon Publishing offers a complete publishing service, including all
the attendant steps such as copy editing, typesetting, artwork, cover design
in full colour, jacket blurb expertise, digital preparation of the manuscript,
ISBN registration and bar coding, registration with the legal deposit libraries,
and so on. We will promote and market your work via the internet, and through
targeting of specific markets where applicable. It is possible to self publish
and do all this yourself but we save you time and effort, and offer the
expertise needed in editorial, manuscript preparation, printing, promotion,
marketing and distribution. You will also be an author published by an independent
and committed publisher which must be worth something in itself.
Finally, on all the books we sell direct we offer the phenomenally high
author's royalty rate of 20%!
